Top 7 T20 Bowlers Of Sri Lanka Of All Time

Bowling in T20 is the most difficult task to do because all the batters here are always trying to score runs as much as possible by hitting boundaries and sixes. The most difficult position to bowl in any T20 game is during the death overs where all the batters become most aggressive to score runs for their team. During this time batters tend to hit all kinds of shots that are possible to score runs quickly. This makes it very difficult for any bowler to find out the perfect line, length and position to restrict the flow of runs.

But there are some bowlers worldwide who are pretty popular to do this difficult task easily and successfully. Sri Lanka is a country where you can find several talented T20 specialist bowlers, some of them got retired and some are still serving the nation. This article is about those bowlers of Sri Lanka who established their name as the finest T20 bowlers of all time not only in the country but in the entire world. In this list, some players got retired and some are still playing for the country as per today breaking news cricket.

1. Lasith Malinga

The first name on our list is the death bowling spearhead Lasith Malinga. To date, the world has not witnessed the quality of Lasith Malinga after he got retired from international cricket. Malinga is pretty well known worldwide because of his sharp yorkers and extremely slow deliveries which deceive opposition batters completely. Malinga played a total of 84 T20I matches where he took 107 wickets and which still holds him as the highest wicket-taker in the country.

2. Nuwan Kulasekara

Nuwan Kulasekara, one of the finest swing bowlers of Sri Lanka, played for 14 years for the country from 2003 to 2017 and is featured second on our list. In 2009, Kulasekara achieved the record of becoming the number-one ODI bowler in the world which no other bowler in Sri Lanka has achieved yet.

Kulasekara played a total of 58 T20I matches from where he took 66 wickets in total with a brilliant economy rate of only 7.45 runs per over. During his time he along with Malinga was the first choice during death bowling.

3. Ajanta Mendis

Ajanta Mendis was one the most deadly off-spinners of his time and is the only spinner who featured in this list. Mendis was a very unique bowler because of his ability to bowl during the death overs. Death overs are mainly bowled by the pacers because of their skill set, but Mendis was different and used to bowl during death overs with other pacers.

Medis in his time was considered a mystery spinner because the batter could not find out the length and line of his every delivery which made them confused and compelled them to get out. Though Mendis did not play many matches for the country he made his impact within a few years worldwide. Ajanta played a total of 39 T20I matches only but took 66 wickets with a brilliant bowling economy of 6.45. To date, Mendis is the only bowler of Sri Lanka who took six wickets-haul two times in the T20I format.

4. Dushmanta Chameera

Chameera is the leading fast bowler of Sri Lanka currently in all three formats of cricket. As a bowler, he is pretty tall and bowls at a rapid pace of around 145km/hr quite regularly and efficiently. To date, Chameera played a total of 50 T20I games for Sri Lanka and took 48 wickets with a respectable bowling average of 30.27. Chameera is not the first choice as a genuine wicket-taker but his ability to restrict the flow of runs of the opposition in any situation makes him one of the great T20 bowlers of Sri Lanka of all time.

His ability of bowling tight overs by maintaining accurate line and length with good swing makes him the first-choice bowler of Sri Lanka especially in the limited over format of cricket.

5. Angelo Mathews

The most talented all-rounder of his time and the former captain of Sri Lanka, Angelo Mathews is featured fifth on this list. Angelo Mathews was mainly a batting all-rounder but his bowling skills in the T20 format were very effective. He was never known for taking a lot of wickets but his tight overs helped the other bowlers of the team to take opposition wickets easily because the batters could not score many runs from Mathews’s overs.

In his entire career, he played a total of 78 T20I matches and took 38 wickets but his highlighting point was his economy rate, only 6.99 runs per over which was brilliant after bowling the most difficult overs in a T20 game.

Though he stop bowling later because of his various injuries and he used to play as a batter in the team.

6. Thisara Perera

Another brilliant all-rounder with destructive batting ability is featured in this list. Perera was a real threat for his destructive batting ability in lower down the order for all opponents. But apart from his destructive batting, Perera was a very handy bowler with various skills in his armoury. In his entire cricketing career, Perera took 45 wickets in total with a reasonable bowling average of 35.08.

7. Isuru Udana

The only left-arm pacer who announced his retirement most recently, Isuru Udana is featured seventh in this list. His main ability was to bowl extremely slow balls to deceive the batters completely and this made him one of the main death bowlers of Sri Lanka at his time.

As a batter also, Udana was pretty handy and this made him a real asset for the team. Udana played a total of only 35 T20I matches for Sri Lanka and took 27 wickets with a respectable average and economy rate.

This is the entire list of top bowlers of Sri Lanka in the T20 format, especially of all time. Apart from these players, there are still some other brilliant bowlers on their side who are now still serving the country. Sri Lanka was never a team who was popular in this shortest format. But their brilliant bowlers have made the name of the country proud in this format recently.
