4 Tips for Seniors Who Want to Become More Tech Savvy

Technology can be overwhelming to seniors, especially with the pace at which it has been evolving over the past few years. However, we’ve become so dependent on it, and not being able to use technology can severely limit you. Not only that, but it will also stop you from enjoying all of its benefits, which are plentiful for aging adults. If you’re a senior and would like to be more tech-savvy but don’t know where to start, here are a few tips that you can follow.

Immerse Yourself in Technology

The best way to get familiar with technology is to immerse yourself in it even if you don’t understand it fully. A lot about technology is learned through trial and error, and simply using tech tools will make you more comfortable around them. Some of the accessories you should consider getting right now are a tablet, a laptop, and a smartphone if you don’t have one already. A smart TV and smart home hub could be great additions.

If you happen to live in a senior facility, you might find that they have various technology resources for you to use. This Westmont assisted living facility from Pathway to Living has technology centers where seniors can actively learn how to use various tools, programs, apps, and devices and become more comfortable with technology. This kind of community could greatly enrich your life and give you a whole new set of skills.

Find a Patient and Willing Teacher

Find someone close to you who understands technology and will be willing to teach you. You might be tempted to ask one of your grandchildren, but they might be too fast for you and might grow impatient. It would be better to find someone around your age group that can understand and empathize with your struggles. They’ll move at a much slower pace, and teach you how they were taught, which will be much more suitable for an older layperson.

Look for Local Workshops or Classes

You should know that there are plenty of technological classes all over the country specifically for seniors, so check if you can find any in your area and what their requirements are. Some will be free if you’re an AARP member too, so consider joining if you haven’t already and look at the different options where you live.

Use Teaching Apps

You should also know that there are apps out there that will teach you how to use apps, sites, and various other tech tools more efficiently. The Empowerji app was created to help seniors live more autonomous lives through technology, and is one of the best of its kind, so you should definitely check it out. You also have apps like Be My Eyes that will allow someone else to look through your rear camera and assist you if you’re stuck on a website or don’t know how to use a certain tool. Both of these could help you how to learn how to use programs and devices better and gradually become more tech-savvy over time.

If you’re a senior and you’re feeling lost in this increasingly techy universe, know that it’s never too late to learn. If you take baby steps, find someone to guide you, and aren’t too harsh on yourself, you’ll eventually start to understand technology much better.
